A self-guided audio walking tour exploring the hidden history of Sheffield's city centre, covering 15 landmarks from the Crucible Theatre.
Steel City Through Time: A Sheffield Sound Odyssey is a self-guided audio walk through the city centre, starting and ending at the Crucible Theatre on Wednesday 30 December. It's put on by AudaTours, and it's a bit different from your usual guided tour: there's no group to follow, no fixed start time, and no entry into the buildings along the way. You just set off when you're ready and go at your own pace.
The route covers about 2.8 km (1.7 miles) across 15 landmarks, with up to 38 minutes of narration to listen to as you go. The audio plays automatically as you approach each stop, so you don't have to keep pausing and playing. Along the way, you'll pass Sheffield Castle, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Tudor Square, the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, and Sheffield Old Town Hall, among others. The whole thing takes up to an hour and a quarter, depending on how slowly you wander.
The organisers say the stories are drawn from verified historical sources and checked before release. They pitch it as the city's hidden history beneath the steel and glass, where ruined castles sleep under busy streets and rebels once whispered in cathedral shadows. It's a good way to see the city centre with a bit of context you wouldn't normally notice on a weekday walk to work.
