90-minute guided walk through Sheffield city centre exploring the places, people and events that made the city the 'World's Home of Football'.
SHOF Guided Football Walks are back in the city centre on Saturday 31 October, with a 90-minute walk starting from the Sheffield Combined Court Centre at 11:00. It's one of several dates they're running, so if that particular Saturday doesn't work, there are others to choose from.
The walk focuses on the people, places and events that made Sheffield the 'World's Home of Football' between 1857 and 1875, the years when the modern game really took shape. In that window, more than 200 teams emerged across the city playing to the 'Sheffield Rules', and Sheffield claimed a long list of footballing firsts: the first football club, the first published Rules of Football, the first knockout tournament, the first team from an industrial works, the first intercity game and the first match played under electric floodlights. The city's inventors gave the game the fixed crossbar, the corner flag and standard pitch dimensions, and it's also where women's football got its start.
Along the way, you'll hear about the figures who drove it all: Nathaniel Creswick, John C Shaw, William Chesterman, Harry W Chambers and John C Clegg, as well as players Jack Hunter and Billy Mosforth. The route itself is mainly flat, taking you through the Cathedral, Fargate and Tudor Square area, with a moderate incline up to the Cathedral. There's also an optional 'EXTRA TIME' at the end, which you can take at no extra cost if you're not in a rush to get away.
