One-night-only performance by Sid Calderbank and the clog dance group The Lancashire Wallopers, with Pete Coe, at The Alder Bar.
Sid Calderbank & The Lancashire Wallopers play The Alder Bar on Sunday 8 November, with Pete Coe joining them. It's a one-night-only pairing that brings together two very different threads of the folk tradition under one roof.
Sid Calderbank is a native speaker of Lancashire dialect who's been collecting songs and stories from the county for more than 40 years. For this one night, he's joined by The Lancashire Wallopers, a group formed in 1981 by students of the legendary clog dancer and music hall entertainer Sam Sherry. They came together for a single performance of the bargees' social dance taught to them by Bill Gibbons at the National Gathering at Cecil Sharp House, and they've kept that spirit going. Their outfits are inspired by the clothes traditionally worn by canal bargees, and their repertoire draws on the steps Sherry taught, other celebrated clog dancers, and the music hall style of The Five Sherry Brothers.
Pete Coe has been a professional musician since 1971. In the 1970s he toured and recorded with Chris Coe, later played in the New Victory Band and Bandoggs, and recorded with Red Shift in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Since 1985 he's worked mainly as a soloist, playing bouzouki, mountain dulcimer, banjo and melodeon, and he also works as a country dance caller. Between Calderbank's dialect songs, the Wallopers' clog dancing, and Coe's multi-instrumental set, there's a fair bit of ground to cover in one evening.
