Guided 90-minute walk of 17 lost football grounds around Sheffield, tracing the history of the Sheffield Rules and the Youdan Cup.
SHOF are back with another guided walk on Saturday 24 October, this one starting at Rossi's Italian in Nether Edge. It's a 90-minute tour of the 'lost football grounds' around Sheffield S2, and it takes in a fair bit of ground for such a short walk: 17 grounds and 30 teams that played there between 1857 and 1875, all under the 'Sheffield Rules'.
The route traces grounds you've probably never heard of, like Highfield, Cremorne Gardens, Sheaf House Ground, Olive Grove, Hounsfield, Truro Works, The Farm, Hyde Park, and The Orphanage, alongside the one you definitely know, Bramall Lane. It's a chance to see where the game actually started in the city, with teams like Sheffield FC, The Wednesday, Milton FC, Mackenzie FC, Wellington FC, Garrick FC, British Ladies FC and Truro Works all getting a mention. Along the way, the walk follows the Youdan Cup and its role in forming the Sheffield FA and the FA Cup, the games of 1867, and the early days of women's football in Sheffield, where British Ladies FC played in 1895. It finishes at Park House, the first clubhouse used by Sheffield FC from 1857 onwards.
