Open mic night where comedians and audience members can share jokes in a supportive stand-up space.
Standup Social Club are running an open mic night in Sheffield on Sunday 1 November, over at 8CW9+6V. It's one of those nights that works both ways: it's a spot for comedians to get on stage and try out new material, and for an audience to come along and hear it. If you've ever wondered what goes into a stand-up set before it's polished for a proper gig, this is exactly where that happens.
Because it's an open mic, the line-up is a bit of a mixed bag. You'll get a range of acts on the same bill, from people who've been doing this for years and are just testing a few new lines, to newcomers who might be stepping up to a mic for the first time. That's the whole point of the format — it's about the process of building a set, not a finished show. The setlist changes from night to night, so you never quite know who's going to turn up or what they'll be talking about.
They describe it as a supportive comedy space, which is a good way of putting it. It's a room where the crowd is as much a part of the night as the people on stage, and the atmosphere is built around giving comedians the room to work through their jokes. If you're thinking of getting up yourself, it's a chance to get some time on your feet in front of a live audience without the pressure of a full headline slot.
