Self-guided audio walk through Sheffield's industrial heritage, from Cutlers' Hall to Leah's Yard, marking Heritage Open Days.
Sheffield Audio Tour: Crucible and Hull runs from Sheffield Central Library on Friday 20 November, with the audio available from 12:00 until 20:00. It's a self-guided audio walk built around the city's cutlery and steel trades, tracing a working day through Sheffield's industrial heritage.
The route starts at the cutlers' company chartered in 1624, then takes you past the cobbled square where John Wesley once met his largest weekday congregation and the Chartists were dispersed by troops. From there, it leads on to Leah's Yard, the only city-centre courtyard restored as a living monument to the people who made Sheffield's name. Along the way, you'll pass Cutlers' Hall, Sheffield Cathedral, and Sheffield Town Hall, before crossing the open ground where crucible-steel furnaces still lie beneath the dirt. The walk finishes at Carver Street Methodist Chapel.
The audio itself runs for about an hour, and with the walking time on top, you're looking at around two hours in total. Because it's self-guided, the whole thing unfolds at your own pace, with no fixed start time and no in-person guide to keep you on a schedule. You can stop where you like and take as long as you need at any of the spots.
