Outdoor, self-guided audio walk through Sheffield's working streets, from Broomhall to Leah's Yard, on the city's cutlery and steel heritage.
Sheffield Audio Tour: Crucible and Hull is running at Sheffield Central Library on Monday 16 November, from 12:00 to 20:00. It's an outdoor, self-guided audio walk that you can take online or in person, following Sheffield's working streets from Broomhall through to Leah's Yard. The whole thing is built around the city's cutlery and steel trades, with the sounds of the cutler's hands and the grinder's wet wheel running through it, and it takes you past the courtyards and company halls of the Little Mesters.
Along the way, it stops at Cutlers' Hall, Sheffield Cathedral, Sheffield Central Library and the Cultural Industries Quarter, tying together carved civic fronts, radical printing, Methodist and Chartist gathering places and the restored yard at Leah's as a living reminder of the craftsmen who made Sheffield's name. There are 16 stops in total, with about an hour of audio and around two hours overall when you factor in the walking time. Because it's self-guided, you can set your own pace and take the time you want at each spot.
It's a good way to see a side of the city that's usually just background noise when you're rushing through. The route connects some of the most recognisable landmarks in the centre with the smaller, quieter corners of the industrial heritage that built the place, and the audio fills in the gaps between them. If you're already in the city on the day, it's a straightforward way to spend an afternoon on your own terms.
