Self-guided audio walking tour of 15 Sheffield landmarks, including the Crucible Theatre and Sheffield Castle, using the free AudaTours app.
A Sheffield Sound Odyssey is a self-guided audio tour that takes you on a walk through the city's history, starting at the Crucible Theatre. It's an on-demand experience rather than a fixed event, so there's no set date or start time — you just set off whenever suits you.
The route covers about 2.8 kilometres (1.7 miles) and takes you past 15 landmarks across the city centre. Along the way, you'll pass the Crucible Theatre, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Sheffield Castle, Tudor Square, and Paradise Square. It takes around an hour and a quarter to walk at your own pace, with roughly 79 minutes of narration to keep you company as you go.
The narration leans on verified historical sources rather than dry commentary, pulling out the stories hidden beneath the city's stone façades: ruined castles sleeping under busy streets, rebels who once whispered in cathedral shadows, and the scandals that broke out in Paradise Square. It's designed to show you a side of the city you might walk past every day without ever noticing.

Practically, it works entirely offline through the free AudaTours app. You book, receive a redemption code by email that never expires, and activate it whenever you next visit the city. One thing to keep in mind: the tour doesn't include entry to any of the buildings or sites along the route, so you'll be taking it all in from the street.
