Self-guided audio tour by AudaTours exploring 15 of Sheffield's historic landmarks, with the audio playing automatically at each stop.
A Sheffield Sound Odyssey kicks off from the Crucible Theatre on Sunday 8 November, a self-guided audio tour that takes you through the city's hidden history. It's put together by AudaTours, and the whole thing runs beneath Sheffield's steel and glass to reveal the layers that don't always make it to the surface: ruined castles sleeping under busy streets and rebels who once whispered in cathedral shadows.
The walk hits 15 landmarks across the city centre, including Sheffield Castle, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Tudor Square and the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. Along the way, it asks the kind of questions that make you look at familiar streets differently: what desperate act triggered a siege at Sheffield Castle, or what vanished beneath the Cathedral's flagstones during a midnight storm?
One of the best bits is how it works. The audio plays automatically as you approach each stop, so your phone can stay in your pocket while you walk. It's delivered through the free AudaTours app, which works offline once you've downloaded it, and you can use it as often as you like. There's no in-person guide to keep pace with, and no entry to any building or site along the route, so you can take your time and stop when you want. It's pitched at solo travellers, couples, families and small groups who'd rather explore on their own schedule than follow a group.
