20th anniversary 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro's dark fairy tale 'Pan's Labyrinth', screened in Spanish with English subtitles at The Light Cinema.
Pan's Labyrinth is back at The Light Sheffield on Sunday 1 November and Monday 2 November, both screenings starting at 19:40. It's a 20th anniversary 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro's dark fairy tale, and it's part of the cinema's 'Explore' series.
Set in post-civil war Spain, the story follows 10-year-old Ofelia, who moves with her pregnant mother to live under the thumb of her cruel stepfather. She's drawn into a mysterious labyrinth, where she meets a faun who tells her she might be a lost princess from an underground kingdom. To return to her true father, she has to complete a series of surreal and perilous tasks that blur the line between reality and fantasy. Del Toro pits the horrors of war against a child's innocence and imagination in what's been described as a beautiful and terrifying dark fairy tale.
It's a Spanish-language film with English subtitles, and it runs about two hours. The cast includes Sergi Lopez, Ivana Baquero, Doug Jones, Ariadna Gil, Álex Angulo and Maribel Verdú. It's rated 15, so it's not one for the younger ones, even with the fairy tale on the surface.
