Northside night presented by Scruff of the Neck, with support from Common Goldfish and The Kellows, for University of Sheffield and Hallam students.
Northside are playing the Foundry at Sheffield Students' Union on Friday 27 November, with Common Goldfish and The Kellows on support. The night is presented by Scruff of the Neck, and it's open to University of Sheffield and Hallam students, with an age restriction of 14+.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, it's worth a bit of digging. Northside formed in Manchester in 1989 and were signed to Factory Records by Tony Wilson after he saw them play a sold-out show at The Boardwalk later that year. Their debut single, 'Shall We Take A Trip?/Moody Places', came out in June 1990, produced by Iain Broudie of The Lightning Seeds and engineered by Cenzo Townshend. It was banned from daytime radio for its drug references, but still reached No. 50 in the UK Charts. The second single, 'My Rising Star', followed in October 1990 and hit No. 32, backed by a video of the band performing on top of Manchester's Arndale Centre.
There was a bit of a televised side to it, too. Granada TV broadcast a live Northside performance filmed at The PSV Club in Hulme, and their tracks became regular features on Granada Soccer Night throughout 1990 and 1991. So, if you've spent any time with the Manchester scene of that era, they're a name that fits right in. The Sheffield show brings them to the Foundry with Common Goldfish and The Kellows opening the bill.
