Ensemble 360 plays masterpieces and miniatures for strings and piano by Sibelius and Grieg in Music in the Round's Northern Lights weekend.
Ensemble 360 are at Music in the Round on Saturday 28 November, playing Northern Lights: Sibelius & Grieg. It's part of a wider weekend the venue is calling Northern Lights, a series of concerts focused on elemental music from the frozen north, with a panel of musicians and experts on hand to talk through the composers and the music featured across the whole thing.
For this particular night, the ensemble is pairing two giants of Nordic classicism: Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg. The programme mixes their larger masterpieces with smaller miniatures for strings and piano, so you'll get the big, sweeping stuff alongside the more intimate pieces. It's a good way to hear how different two composers from the same region can sound, and how they both worked with the same basic ingredients of strings and piano.
Ensemble 360 is the resident group here, formed in 2022 by Tim Horton on piano, Rachel Roberts on viola, and Robert Plane on clarinet. They took their name from one of Robert Schumann's alter egos, and they've been the house ensemble for Music in the Round since they started. This is one of several Nordic-themed events they're putting on over the weekend, so if you're into this kind of thing, there's plenty to pick from.

If you want to make a proper day of it, you can catch more than one. The Sibelius and Grieg concert is on Saturday 28 November at Music in the Round in Sheffield.
