Lucy Porter brings her stand-up show 'Let Yourself Go' to The Steamworks in Sheffield.
Lucy Porter brings her new show, Let Yourself Go, to The Steamworks on Sunday 18 October. It's her eighteenth solo show, an hour of stand-up that looks at what it means to age, evolve and loosen your grip on self-image and social expectations. The title came from a YouTube comment she spotted after appearing on Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, and the material stays in that midlife territory: botox regrets, menopausal rage and a newfound love of slankets and garden centres.
There's plenty of older ground to cover too. She tells stories of clubbing in the 1990s, working at Granada Television and being married to a man more than a foot taller than her. It's a mix of the more recent, domestic stuff and the earlier chapters of her life, tied together by that central theme of letting go of how you're supposed to look and act.
If you're not familiar with her, Porter's a regular on BBC Radio 4 panel shows like The News Quiz and Just a Minute, and on television including Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week and QI. She co-hosts the podcast Fingers on Buzzers with Jenny Ryan. Before that, she studied English literature at the University of Manchester and wrote for the Big Issue in the North, starting stand-up while researching shows at Granada. She was a runner-up at the 1996 So You Think You're Funny competition at the Edinburgh Fringe, so she's been at this for a long time.
