Hands-on workshop with Andrew Gale and Kim Bevan to typeset, print and hand-make a unique artists' book on the studio's Adana platen press.
Andrew Gale and Kim Bevan are running a letterpress and artists' books workshop at Carousel Print Studio on Saturday 20 March, from 10:30 am to 4 pm. It's a hands-on introduction to the craft, and you'll be working on the studio's 3"x5" Adana platen press. The session starts with a brief look at letterpress and artists' books within the context of fine art practice, so there's a bit of background to get your head around before you get stuck in.
From there, you'll typeset and print your own words, then hand-make the printed work into a pamphlet stitch or concertina book to take home as a unique artists' book. You're asked to bring a few words or concepts of your own to print — a short sentence, lines from a poem, or found words. The whole process, from setting the type to binding the pages, happens in one go, and you leave with a finished book you've made yourself.
The two running it come from different ends of the print world. Andrew Gale's fine art practice spans drawing, painting and printmaking, inspired by the natural and built environment; recent series include Songs from the Landscape, and he's been exhibiting in Chicago since 2021. He holds a BA and a Master of Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University. Kim Bevan is an experienced book artist who works predominantly with paper, using 3D sculptural folding, printmaking, paper cutting and illustration. Between them, they cover the printing and the book-making sides of the day.
