Screening of the documentary about Graham Fellows' comedy character John Shuttleworth, with a post-screening Q&A hosted by Tom Ryan.
Graham Fellows is coming to Showroom Cinema on Sunday 22 November, appearing as his long-running alter ego John Shuttleworth for a special 20th-anniversary screening of the comedy documentary It's Nice Up North. The film follows Shuttleworth on a gently absurd journey through the Shetland Islands to test the theory that the further north you go, the nicer people become — a quest foiled by failing light, a flat car battery and the constant wind, which leaves him asking everyone he meets, 'Is it nice up North?'.
Shot by the celebrated photographer Martin Parr, whose distinctive eye is central to the film's charm, the documentary is now presented as a tribute to him. The screening forms part of Showroom Cinema's 'DocNights' series, a monthly programme run with Sheffield DocFest, the UK's leading documentary festival. After the film, Fellows stays on for a Q&A hosted by Tom Ryan, founder of Honk!, to talk about the making of the film and his on- and off-screen relationship with Parr.
That conversation is where the night really opens up. Fellows and Ryan will look at how Parr adapted his still-photography techniques to a film camera and a crew on a remote Scottish island, and how that collaboration shaped the film's particular look. It's a chance to hear about the process behind the scenes, rather than just the finished product.
