Free gig by the Sheffield sextet Jazz Hot Six, playing Gypsy Swing and bebop, at Yellow Arch Studios.
Jazz Hot Six are playing Yellow Arch Studios on Tuesday 3 November, with the music starting at 20:00. It's a six-piece jazz set in Neepsend, and if you've not come across them before, they're mostly Sheffield musicians. The line-up is Martin Winning on clarinet, Emily Chaplais on violin, Shez Sheridan on guitar, lap steel and vocals, Bryan Day on guitar and vocals, Kate Whittaker on double bass and Andrew Flude on drums.
They describe themselves as sharing a passion for great swinging music, and the set follows a fairly clear line through jazz history. They start with the early traditional Gypsy Swing of the 1930s and 40s, work their way through to the bebop era of the early 1950s, and then keep going from there, with hints of Western Swing thrown in. It's a broad stretch of ground to cover in one night, and the line-up—clarinet, violin, two guitars, bass and drums—is built for that kind of swing.
There's a fair bit of session history behind the group. They've played alongside names like Van Morrison, John Martyn, Richard Hawley, Peter Green, Duane Eddy, Ray Charles, Roger Daltrey, Nick Lowe and Tanita Tikaram, so they're well-used to sharing a stage with big names. Most of them are from around Sheffield, too, so this is local talent rather than a touring act passing through.
