Intimate acoustic folk and Americana show by Cambridge duo Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage, with Jon Thorne, at The Greystones.
Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage play The Greystones on Sunday 25 October, with Jon Thorne joining them on stage. They're a folk duo from Cambridge who met at their local Black Fen Folk Club, and they've been playing together since 2016. The set is built around intimate duets performed around a single microphone, with mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar as the only accompaniment.
Their sound sits somewhere between American roots and English folk, and they describe it as a blend of the two. They draw on figures from both sides of the Atlantic — Gram & Emmylou, Shirley & Davey, Gillian & David — and they've spent the last decade working their way across that ground. Sanders brings a voice of disarming purity, while Savage is a bubbling ferment of energy and infectious enthusiasm, able to play any instrument with grace. Together they build a widescreen, cinematic soundscape from an unplugged, acoustic presentation.
Since they emerged in 2016, they've defied easy labels. There's a touch of Americana but they're quintessentially English; they're traditional yet contemporary, with a writing style all their own. That blend has seen them share stages with folk and Americana names like Sarah Jarosz, Martin Simpson, Seth Lakeman and Oh Susanna.
