A social reading session where attendees can sample graphic novels, comics and zines in a calm, analogue-friendly environment at Treehouse.
Graphic Novel Reading Room is back at Treehouse on Tuesday 20 October, from 16:00 to 21:00. It's a first-of-its-kind social event: you pick up a graphic novel, a comic or a zine and read it in the company of others in a calm, analogue-friendly space. There's no group discussion, so everyone reads their own choice at their own pace, arriving and leaving as they please.
The collection spans fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, horror, graphic medicine and more, and it grows steadily. Gabi Putnoki, who runs the room, also brings along some of her own vast graphic novel collection for visitors to enjoy. Putnoki describes the whole thing as a chance to sample comics in a quiet but sociable environment, as if discovering film for the first time.
It's a slow-paced afternoon and evening, and the Treehouse kitchen serves food, drinks and cakes while you're there. The event is promoted on Instagram at @graphicnovelreadingroom, and Broken Frontier has interviewed Putnoki about the project. The club launched five years ago at Showroom Cinema, where it has since popped up as part of the cinema's PLAY festival of film and interactive creativity for families.
