Good Habits

Good Habits play Yellow Arch Studios on Friday 23 October, with the set running from 7:00pm to 11:00pm. It's a night presented by the venue itself, and they describe their sound as a joyous and unexpected fusion of folk, jazz and more. The line-up is built around vocals, cello, accordion, synths and drums, so you've got a fair bit of ground covered in one band: the folk comes through in the cello and accordion, the jazz in the rhythm and phrasing, and the synths pull it into something a bit more modern. It's not a standard folk set, nor is it a straight-ahead jazz gig; it's what happens when those things sit together in the same room.

That mix is the whole point. The cello and accordion bring a warm, acoustic feel, while the synths and drums keep things moving and open up the sound. It's a broad palette to work with, and the way they combine them is what gives the music its character. If you're into folk but fancy something a bit more adventurous, or if you like jazz but don't want it to stay in one lane, this is exactly where those things meet.

Yellow Arch Studios is in Neepsend, at 30-36 Burton Road, Sheffield S3 8BX. It's a room with a capacity of 180, so it's small enough that you're close to the stage. The show is for over-16s, and under-18s are admitted only when accompanied by an adult. Tickets are £13.20 to £19.80, and the music runs from 7:00pm to 11:00pm.
