Live gig by new wave and art rock trio Formal Sppeedwear with support from Vehicle at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield.
Formal Sppeedwear play Yellow Arch Studios on Monday 2 November, with Vehicle supporting. They're a British New Wave and art rock trio from Stoke-on-Trent, made up of Beck Clewlow, Charlie Ball and Connor Wells, and this is one of two dates they're playing in the north this November, with Leeds to follow.
They've been described as masterful studio architects of hooky, jagged post-punk, and that's a fair way to put it. The sound is quirky and synth-driven, and they keep a strict DIY approach to their production. You can hear it in their single 'Who Needs Spain Ball?', which opens with quavering, echoed yelps and serrated 12-string electric riffs over a thrusting krautrock groove — it's the kind of thing that draws comparisons to late-70s XTC and Television.
They've spent the last while preparing their debut studio album, Punch Card, for release in 2026, so these shows come as they're getting ready to put it out. If you've caught them before, you'll know the sort of thing to expect; if not, this is a good place to start.
