Nine-day free festival of over 300 showcases across city-centre venues, pairing University of Sheffield research with art, music, VR and film.
Festival of the Mind returns to Sheffield city centre from 6 to 15 November 2026, running across nine days. It's the University of Sheffield's biennial celebration of its research, and this eighth edition is billed as the most ambitious one yet. The whole thing is free.
There are over 300 showcases across 43 projects, and the range is wide enough that you can pick your own path through it. Dub pioneers The Black Dog play live, and there are tastings of 16th- and 17th-century drink recipes. You can take a VR journey through the University's medical school, tracing it back to 1828, or watch the immersive film Furnace to Fusion. The research on display covers Roman glassmaking, fusion energy and interstellar nurseries.
That's the core of the festival: pairing academic researchers with artists and experts from South Yorkshire's cultural sector to turn complex work into public events. It's been running since 2012 and has drawn more than 200,000 visitors into the city centre. This edition also marks the end of an era: co-founder and director Professor Vanessa Toulmin is stepping down after 15 years at the helm. She traced the festival's spark back to a conversation with local sculptor Anthony Bennett. Deputy Vice President for Research Professor John Flint said research is at the core of what the university does, and the festival's mission remains to entertain, inspire and engage. Past editions have brought a Spiegeltent to the city as the festival's hub.

Events are spread across the city centre. The main venues are the Millennium Gallery, the Winter Garden, Persistence Works and Channing Hall on Surrey Street, with one-off events at the Sheffield Library Theatre and the Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association (SADACCA). It's all free, so you can drop in for a single talk or spend the whole nine days working your way through the programme.
