Echoes of Obsidian reimagines their symphonic metal for an intimate jazz noir show, 'Velvet & Venom', with sultry vocals and haunting bass.
Echoes of Obsidian bring their Velvet and Venom show to HMV Meadow Hall on Wednesday 25 November, with Adele and Chris Tiberius Heald taking the stage as a duo. If you've come across the band before, you'll know them for powerful symphonic metal—cinematic orchestration, soaring vocals and driving riffs. This is a different animal entirely. For the Velvet and Venom album and tour, they've stripped away the full metal instrumentation and gone for an intimate jazz noir reinterpretation, focusing on the darker, moodier side of the band.
It's a stripped-back version of the project, with Adele on vocals and Chris Tiberius Heald on bass and vocals. They describe the sound as sitting somewhere between dark jazz, gothic cabaret and acoustic noir, with atmospheric arrangements inspired by smoky jazz lounges and noir cinema. Coming from the industrial heart of Sheffield, they pitch it as a blend of sultry vocals, haunting bass lines and a late-night atmosphere they say is dripping with dark elegance, dangerous romance and candlelit intrigue. It's a far cry from the symphonic metal they're usually known for, so it's a good chance to hear them in a completely different light.
