Free afternoon of jazz noir reinterpretations of Echoes of Obsidian's Velvet and Venom album by Adele and Chris Tiberius Heald, with special guest Robyn Gair.
Echoes of Obsidian bring their Velvet and Venom tour to Alder on Sunday 6 December, an afternoon show that strips the band down to its barest form. If you know them from their usual work, you'll recognise them as a symphonic metal act—cinematic orchestration, soaring vocals, and driving riffs. But for this album and tour, they've gone in a completely different direction.
Velvet and Venom is an intimate jazz noir reinterpretation of the band, with Adele on vocals and Chris Tiberius Heald on bass and vocals. They've set aside the full metal instrumentation to explore a darker, moodier side of the project, with atmospheric arrangements they describe as sitting somewhere between dark jazz, gothic cabaret and acoustic noir—the kind of sound you'd expect from a smoky jazz lounge or a noir film. It's a far cry from the symphonic metal they're known for, and that's the whole point of this particular run.
Opening for them is Robyn Gair, a Sheffield-based singer-songwriter and guitarist whose music blends atmospheric vocals and intricate fingerpicking with jazz, folk and acoustic influences. The whole thing is presented by Artful Witch Promotions as part of the Velvet and Venom tour, so it's one stop on a wider run of dates rather than a one-off.
