Community debate night run by the Sheffield Debate Group, where members discuss open-ended questions in a circle and practice civil discourse.
The Sheffield Debate Group are hosting another one of their evenings at the Rutland Arms on Thursday 19 November, starting at 18:00. If you've never come across them, they're a community of curious minds, free thinkers and casual debaters who meet up to work through a wide range of topics — philosophy, current events, pop culture and ethics all make the list.
The whole thing is built around the lost art of civil discourse. The aim isn't to win arguments, but to understand each other better and to challenge your own assumptions. Each meetup centres on open-ended questions voted for by the members, and everyone gets a chance to speak in a circle. The group follows one Golden Rule: attack the idea, never the person. By the end of the night, the room either reaches a shared perspective or agrees to disagree.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Sheffield and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

It's a straightforward, open format, so you don't need to be a seasoned debater or have a particular background to join in. Whether you're there to listen or to get involved, the focus is on the conversation itself rather than on coming out on top. The session runs from 18:00 at the Rutland Arms, 86 Brown St, Sheffield, S1 2BS.
