Welsh folk project Cynefin, the project of Owen Shiers, brings a full band to Highfield Trinity Church, with singer Tayo Aluko.
Cynefin plays Highfield Trinity Church on Saturday 14 November, bringing together Welsh and Afro-American song and story in one night. It's presented by Three Acres And A Cow, and it's Cynefin's first time playing Sheffield.
Cynefin is the project of Welsh folk musician Owen Shiers, who's bringing a full band with him. He's a UK Folk Album of the Year nominee with a background in music composition and engineering, and he was named Best Solo Artist at the 2019 Welsh Folk Awards. He'll be sharing the bill with Tayo Aluko, an award-winning singer, actor and playwright who's returning to Sheffield with stories and songs drawn from the life of Afro-American civil rights pioneer Paul Robeson. Part of that is Robeson's longstanding friendship and solidarity with the Welsh coal mining community, which ties the two halves of the evening together.
Between them, the night puts Welsh and Afro-American culture side by side in song and story. Shiers brings the Welsh side of things, and Aluko brings the stories of Robeson, with the connection to the Welsh mining community running through the middle. There's one interval in the middle of the evening.
