Guided creative writing walk through Victorian Walkley, the city's Carnegie Library, the Rivelin Jewish Cemetery and Rivelin Park, led by novelist Anne Grange.
The Writers Workshop are running a creative writing and nature walk through Walkley and Rivelin on Saturday 7 November, led by novelist, poet and editor Anne Grange. It's a morning of walking and writing that starts at Aesthete Coffee + Kitchen on South Road and winds its way through some of the city's quieter, more overlooked corners. Grange has lived in Sheffield since 1995 and is a keen nature lover, and the walk is built around the forgotten stories of the city's residents and the history of the area.
The route begins in Victorian Walkley, passing Sheffield's only surviving Carnegie Library and the building where John Ruskin started his first museum. From there, it reaches St Mary's cemetery, consecrated in 1880 to keep pace with the city's growing population, before continuing through Rivelin Jewish Cemetery and St Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Along the way, Grange draws on the human stories researched by The Friends of Walkley Cemetery, so it's as much about the people buried there as the landscape around them. The group stops at Rivelin Park cafe and finishes at Malin Bridge tram stop.
Anne Grange is a novelist, poet and editor whose latest novel, Field Values, is out now. She's led the group through the city's hidden histories before, and this one follows a similar thread—looking at the local landscape through the lives of the people who once lived here. The walk is for ages 16 and over, and you can get there from the city centre on the 95 or 52a bus.
