A writing workshop led by Helen Bright and Andie M. Long on how to build surprising paranormal and fantasy characters, part of The Writers Workshop's Weird Weekend.
Helen Bright and Andie M. Long are leading a writing workshop on creating paranormal characters at The Writers Workshop on Saturday 24 October, from 13:00 to 15:00. It's an over-18s session, and the focus is on building surprising paranormal and fantasy characters and figuring out how to blend them seamlessly into the 'normal' world.
They start by sharing their own character-creation techniques, and from there they walk you through developing an original paranormal or fantasy lead or villain. The process begins by searching for the character within the realm of the ordinary, before transforming them with a power or trait that makes them extraordinary and other-worldly. It's a practical way of working from the ground up rather than just starting with the magic.
The workshop is part of The Writers Workshop's Weird Weekend, a week of events themed around fantasy and magic, so it sits within a wider run of things if you're in the mood for the supernatural. Refreshments are provided on the day, which is a nice touch for a mid-afternoon session.
