Screening of Zeinabu irene Davis' feature 'Compensation' as part of Showroom Cinema's L.A. Rebellion season of Black filmmakers.
Zeinabu irene Davis's Compensation screens at Showroom Cinema on Sunday 25 October, as part of the cinema's L.A. Rebellion season. It's an ambitious feature debut that links the African American present of the 1980s to the Black modernism of the early 20th century, juxtaposing two love stories—one from each era—played by the same actors. The film is shown as part of a four-Sunday series at Showroom, an award-winning four-screen independent cinema founded in 1993 and home to the Showroom Creative Hub, which also hosts Sheffield DocFest and regular clubs for over-55s, parents with babies, families, and autism- and dementia-friendly screenings.
To get where Compensation comes from, it helps to know the L.A. Rebellion. The movement grew in the late 20th century when a wave of Black graduates came through the UCLA Film School. Inspired by the French New Wave, Italian neo-realism, and emerging African cinemas, the films that came out of it act as an alternative to the Hollywood idea of American filmmaking—at once highly political and intimately personal. Davis's film sits right in that tradition, reaching back across the decades to connect two different moments in Black American life.
