Guided walk led by artist Simon Wigglesworth-Baker through Kelham Island and Neepsend, with street art, public sculpture and a visit to Kelham Island Art Collective.
Kelham Island Walks are running an Art & Studios Tour of Kelham Island & Neepsend on Saturday 12 December, starting at 2pm and lasting about two hours. It's one of three routes they run, alongside the original Kelham Island Walking Tour and the Neepsend Walking Tour, and this one focuses on the creative side of the area.
The walk is led by Simon Wigglesworth-Baker, a sculptor and painter who lives and works in Neepsend. He co-founded the Kelham Island Art Collective (KIAC), which is home to more than 25 artists, and he still teaches art, drawing on decades of involvement in the area's creative and community life. Along the way, you'll see street art by Phlegm, Kid Acne, Bubba 2000, Jo Peel, JupiterFab, JAW, Jo Genders and Fem Sorcell, as well as public-commissioned sculpture and historic work. There's also a visit to KIAC to see artists at work.
Kelham Island was one of Sheffield's first industrial districts, where factories and houses jostled together, and the tour weaves in stories from the local art scene and the neighbourhood's past. It's as much about the people and the history as it is about the art on the walls.
