Folk evening by the duo Tightrope Moon, with violin, viola and vocals, at Cafe No9.
Tightrope Moon play Cafe No9 on Thursday 19 November, with music starting at 7pm. The duo is Seth Bye and Cori Smith, and the set brings together violin, viola and vocals.
Their sound draws on a few different threads: gritty re-imaginings of English, Swedish and American tunes, alongside their own compositions and ethereal improvisations. They describe it as celestial sounds and hypnotic melodies, and the two instruments — violin and viola — weave around the vocals. It's a mix of traditional roots and something more open, with the improvisations sitting alongside the set pieces.
Both have a fair bit of ground behind them. Cori Smith was a BBC Young Musician finalist and is known across England and Sweden. Seth Bye's work in Filkin's Drift has been featured on BBC Radio 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music. Together they've played some of the bigger folk festivals, including Sidmouth, Cambridge, FolkEast and Shrewsbury. Critics have called their sound otherworldly yet deeply rooted in tradition, and the groove-based side of their playing comes through live.
