Maddie Morris reworks traditional songs to explore contemporary issues, with support from Annie Priest, at Cafe No9.
Maddie Morris plays Cafe No9 on Friday 23 October, with special support from Annie Priest. It's a night that sits in the folk tradition, though Morris doesn't keep it there: she takes traditional song in new directions to shine a light on contemporary issues, so the set will be as much about the present as it is about the old songs she's working from.
Morris is known for that kind of approach — using the old forms to talk about things that still matter. It's a way of keeping traditional music from becoming a museum piece, and it's what gives her work its particular edge. Annie Priest opens the night, so there'll be two sets of folk-inflected singing before the room clears.
