An evening of jazz, soul and folk from Manchester artists Gideon Conn and Ben P Williams at Cafe No9.
Gideon Conn and Ben P Williams are playing Cafe No9 on Thursday 10 December, a double bill of two Manchester songwriters sharing one night in Sheffield. It's a small room — 40 capacity, disabled access but no disabled toilets — and the night is presented by the venue itself.
Gideon Conn has been at this for a while; he describes his search for a new sound as continuing into a third decade. He works part-time in a hardware store, which he says provides the routine, rhythm and window to the world that feeds his songwriting. He's got a fifth album on the way, and his following stretches across jazz, soul, hip-hop and what he calls hard musical nonsense.
Ben P Williams is a singer-songwriter known for honesty in the middle and mischief around the edges. Since his debut Who Do You Think You Are? in 2015, he's built his following by blending folk, acoustic and soul influences, drawing comparisons to Paul Simon and Jack Johnson and getting play on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing. He's released five albums, including Benthusiasm, and plays either solo or with his band; his live shows are praised for their warmth, humour and heartfelt delivery.
