Sheffield musicians Ric Booth, Alastair Gordon and El Heneghan stage a tribute to Leonard Cohen with songs from across his career.
Ric Booth, Alastair Gordon and El Heneghan are playing a Leonard Cohen tribute at Cafe No9 on Friday 6 November. It's the first of two back-to-back shows, titled New Skin For The Old Ceremony, and it marks ten years since Cohen passed away. The three of them are all Sheffield musicians who've come together for this, and they're drawing on songs from across his whole career rather than sticking to one era.
That means the set will pull from both ends of the catalogue: the fan favourites you've heard a thousand times alongside the deeper cuts that rarely get out. They're interpreting them on guitar, double bass and accordion, and they're bringing in the drum-machine sound of the 1980s material too, so the later, more electronic side of his work gets a look-in alongside the acoustic stuff. It's a broad sweep of his songwriting, from the early folk years through to the later records.
Cafe No9 is a small room — 40 capacity — so it'll be a tight fit. There's disabled access, though no disabled toilets on site. The night is open to all ages, with under-14s needing an adult with them. Tickets are £15 plus a £1.50 booking fee, and that includes a BYOB fee, so you can bring your own drinks along.
