Biweekly Saturday creative writing course for absolute beginners led by Raquel Vogl at Orchard Square.
The Writers Workshop is running an Absolute Beginner Creative Writing Course at Orchard Square this winter, starting on Saturday 21 November. It's five biweekly sessions, all from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm: 21 November, 5 December, 19 December, 9 January and 23 January 2027. The course is run by The Writers Workshop, a Sheffield nonprofit social enterprise built on four pillars: community, bringing together writers of all backgrounds; creativity, stimulating the writing process; craft, developing self-editing and critiquing skills; and careers, helping writers professionalise and explore routes to publication. Its founder, writer Beverley Ward, also runs wellbeing-focused sessions like the Sunday Soul Sessions.
Raquel Vogl leads this beginner level. She's an American writer, musician and teacher who has taught English and writing in many settings, and her work has appeared in Storgy, The Sheffield Review and The Donna Collective. She also performs with her band Persona, who release records on the Sonido Polifonico label. The sessions combine exercises, craft and discussion, with a chance to share work but no pressure to do so; past attendees describe the atmosphere as supportive and inspiring.

It's a slow-burn course that stretches across two months, so you've got time to work on things between sessions rather than trying to cram it all into a single weekend. The sessions run on Saturday mornings, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, starting 21 November and continuing 5 December, 19 December, 9 January and 23 January 2027. The venue is Orchard Square, 14 Orchard Square, Sheffield City Centre, S1 2FB, and it's worth noting it has no step-free access. Tickets are between £81.96 and £109.05.
