Three-day workplace first aid qualification covering CPR, AED use, severe bleeding, burns, fractures and other emergencies, with e-learning plus practical training.
First Aid at Work (FAW) is running at The Hope Centre on Bernard Road (S2 5BQ) from Monday 2 November to Wednesday 4 November. It's a three-day course, 9:00am to 5:00pm each day, and it's the full workplace first aid qualification that most medium and higher-risk workplaces need. It's accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB) and delivered in a blended format: around six hours of e-learning to get you started, followed by two days of practical training. It's a fair bit more extensive than the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course, which is usually enough for low-risk places like shops, offices and public venues; this one is for factories, warehouses, industrial sites and chemical facilities.
The syllabus covers everything from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies. You'll go through CPR, how to use an AED, choking, severe bleeding, burns, fractures, head and spinal injuries, seizures, anaphylaxis and diabetic emergencies, all managed in line with RIDDOR. You're assessed by continuous observation and written tests, and the certificate is valid for three years. The HSE recommends at least one first aider per 50 employees in low-hazard environments and one per 25 in higher-hazard workplaces, so it's worth checking where your own place sits before you sign up.
