Graeae and ETT production of Lettie Precious's coming-of-age play about two African students navigating life in Sheffield, with audio description and captioning.
12 Letters To My Name runs at the Playhouse from 12 to 26 June 2027, a Sheffield Theatres, ETT and Graeae production. The play is by Lettie Precious, who describes it as her deeply personal coming-of-age story about what it means to grow up between different worlds.
Set right here in Sheffield, it follows Tobi and Jay, the only two Africans in their class and newly arrived in England, who have to navigate a new life alongside the quiet ache of home. As they struggle to hold onto their names and themselves, they find connection in unexpected places and in the bonds they form with one another. It's a story about the friction of starting over in a place that doesn't quite know how to hold you, and the friendships that make it possible anyway.
One thing that sets this run apart is that every performance integrates audio description and captioning, so it's accessible to everyone from the start rather than as an add-on. The production is a collaboration between Sheffield Theatres, ETT and Graeae, and it's being staged at the Playhouse, which is part of the Sheffield Theatres complex on Norfolk Street.
