An evening of strange and surreal, mostly ghostly tales told by Storytellers of San Diego, with live music, for ages 12 and up.
Storytellers of San Diego are taking over the Moxie Theatre on Tuesday, October 6, for Supernatural, Strange, Surreal: Stories to Haunt. It's an evening of ghostly tales told live on stage, with live music running alongside the storytelling. The whole thing is for ages 12 and up, so it's a good one to bring a teenager along to.
The lineup is a long one. JT Moring, Tyler Turner, and Lissette Ryan each take the stage, followed by Linda Brown, Patti Christiansen, and James Nelson-Lucas, and then Mindy Donner and Fred Laskowski. With that many voices, you'll get a good range of stories rather than just one or two long ones. The theme is right there in the title—ghosts, the strange, and the surreal—and the live music is woven in throughout the night.
One thing to keep in mind: the organizers believe it's never too early to don a costume, and they're encouraging everyone to show up in one. If you're into the spirit of the season, this is your excuse to lean into it. The Moxie Theatre itself is a professional non-profit founded in 2005 by Jo Anne Glover, Liv Kellgren, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, and Jennifer Eve Thorn. Their mission is to create more diverse and honest images of women by producing plays and playwrights that defy female stereotypes. They describe the unifying quality of their work as 'moxie'—courage, pluck, gumption, perseverance, and guts. The theatre is in the Aztec Shopping Center in the Rolando neighborhood, close to San Diego State University.
