Write Out Loud's annual PoeFest, an evening of gothic mystery and literature of the macabre, with three performances each night.
PoeFest returns to the Villa Montezuma Museum this October, Write Out Loud's annual evening of gothic mystery and macabre literature. It runs over six nights—October 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, and 31—with three performances each night at 6:00 PM, 7:30 PM, and 9:00 PM. The bill mixes supernatural stories, witches, and voodoo with one of Edgar Allan Poe's ghastliest tales, The Premature Burial.
Directed by Rachael VanWormer and Veronica Murphy, the cast brings together a group of veteran Poe performers: Rhianna Basore, Manny Fernandez, Monique Gaffney, Eddie Yaroch, Walter Ritter, and Veronica Murphy herself, with newcomer Geoffrey Geisinger joining the lineup. Artistic Director Veronica Murphy describes the material as hauntingly creepy stories that make your spine tingle, and the program keeps Poe and his compatriots at the center of the evening.
The setting is the Villa Montezuma itself: the historic Jesse Shepard house, a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1887 for the pianist, author, and Spiritualist who wrote under the pen name Francis Grierson. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house opened to the public in November 1972 and is owned by the City of San Diego and run by the Friends of the Villa Montezuma, a 501(c)(3). Murphy says the villa makes the perfect backdrop for the night.
