Wynton Marsalis returns to San Diego with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for a landmark performance marking his final season as Artistic Director.
Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra play Jacobs Music Center on Friday, February 26, 2027. It's part of the La Jolla Music Society's Jazz Series, which is in its 58th season. This is a full orchestra date, not a small group, so you're getting the whole ensemble on stage together.
There's a bit of weight to this one: this is Marsalis's final season as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the orchestra. He's led the group for years, and this is one of the last times you'll see him at the helm. The La Jolla Music Society bills it as a rare chance to see him and the JLCO together in a single performance, and since it's his swan song as director, it's a good time to catch them if you've been meaning to.
The lineup is a full horn section. On trumpet, you've got Ryan Kisor, Kenny Rampton, and Marcus Printup. Chris Crenshaw and Elliot Mason handle trombone. The saxes are a big part of the sound: Chris Lewis on tenor, alto, clarinet, and flute; Alexa Tarantino on alto; Sherman Irby on alto, soprano, clarinet, and flute; Abdias Armenteros on tenor and soprano; and Paul Nedzela on baritone and bass clarinet. Carlos Henriquez is on bass, Dan Nimmer on piano, and Obed Calvaire on drums and tambourine. With that many players, the sound is a big, orchestral jazz rather than a tight combo.
