A jazz concert by the Julian Lage Quartet, featuring guitarist Julian Lage, keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Kenny Wollesen, with opener Laura Itandehui.
The Julian Lage Quartet plays the Epstein Family Amphitheater on Saturday, October 24, with Laura Itandehui opening the night. The show is presented by ArtPower at UC San Diego.
The quartet is built around guitarist Julian Lage, playing alongside keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Much of the set comes from their latest album, Scenes from Above, which blends jazz, folk, blues and improvisation into music they describe as rich in warmth, nuance and texture. It's the kind of playing where each person listens and responds to the others in real time, so the improvisational side of the record should come through on stage.
Laura Itandehui opens the evening with her own set before the quartet takes over. Between the two acts, there's a full night of music to work through.
