Legendary jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman returns to San Diego with his quartet for the Athenaeum Jazz Fall 2026 Series.
Joshua Redman is back in San Diego on Tuesday, November 3, at the Scripps Research Auditorium. It's his first time bringing his own quartet to the city in 15 years, so if you've been following him since his early days, this is the first chance to catch him here with his own band in over a decade.
Redman's career has a long trail behind it. He stepped into the public eye in 1991 after winning the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, and his early years were spent playing with some of the biggest names in jazz: Charlie Haden, Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, McCoy Tyner, Clark Terry, Milt Jackson, and his father, Dewey Redman. He also worked early on with Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade. Since then, he's released 10 albums as a leader to international critical acclaim, including Words Fall Short, which came out in 2025.
For this show, he's bringing the full quartet: Redman on saxophone, Paul Cornish on piano, Philip Norris on bass, and Nazir Ebo on drums. The concert is part of the Athenaeum Jazz Fall 2026 Series, which marks 30 years of jazz at Scripps Research. The hall opened in the fall of 1996 with performances by Jimmy Smith, James Moody, and the TanaReid quintet with Mark Turner, so this season falls right on that anniversary.
