Point Loma High alum Dr. Jeffrey Bennett, astrophysicist and author, gives a talk on the scale of the universe and signs copies of his book.
Dr. Jeffrey Bennett is coming back to his old neighborhood for a talk at the Point Loma/Hervey Library on Thursday, October 22, at 4:30 PM. He's a Point Loma High graduate from the class of 1976 and a Pointer Hall of Fame member, so this is a local returning home.
Bennett is an astrophysicist, author, and teacher who's spent his career writing for a wide range of audiences. He's the lead author of best-selling university textbooks across four different subject areas—astronomy, mathematics, statistics, and astrobiology—and has written seven award-winning science books for children. Those children's books have a pretty unique claim to fame: they've all been read aloud to kids from space by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. He's also donated more than 30,000 copies of them to teachers and school libraries in over 60 countries and put together a free digital textbook on Earth and space science for middle schoolers.

At the talk, he'll be speaking on the scale of the universe, and he'll be signing copies of his book The Scale of the Universe. It's a chance to hear from someone who works at the intersection of high-level astrophysics and science communication, and who's spent as much time writing for university students as he has for kids. The talk is at the Point Loma/Hervey Library in San Diego on Thursday, October 22, starting at 4:30 PM.
