Group exhibition of fifteen artists working across painting, photography and printmaking, each inspired by landscape, at Modern West Fine Art.
Under Open Skies is running at Modern West Fine Art through November 6, with the gallery at 242 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City. It opened on September 18, and the opening reception that night was part of the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
Fifteen artists are in the show, working across painting, photography, printmaking, and a few other creative processes. They all share one starting point: the landscape. That's the guiding inspiration for each of them, and the work ranges pretty widely from there. Tom Schulte has large-scale copper reliefs, and Kevin Perry brings photographs of Helper, Utah. Laura Hope Mason and Billy Schenck both do colorful interpretations of the desert, while Ludivine Gérard takes a more abstract approach, treating the landscape as an evolving structure. Together, the pieces form a tapestry of the places these artists call home, all connected under the same sky.
The full lineup includes Shonto Begay, Shalee Cooper, Phil Epp, Nathan Florence, Alexandra Fuller, Kiki Gaffney, Ludivine Gérard, Suzanne Hill, Tom Judd, Laura Hope Mason, Kevin Perry, Billy Schenck, Tom Schulte, Woody Shepherd, Eugene Tapahe, and Xi Zhang. With fifteen names on the wall, there's a lot to see in one room, and you'll find a mix of styles and mediums rather than a single, uniform look. If you're into how different artists can take the same subject—the landscape—and come at it from completely different angles, this is a good one to walk through.
