Screening of scenes from A Madden's documentary 'Turn Towards Life' followed by a panel discussion with the director, creative team and film participants.
Turn Towards Life: A Queer Birth Story and Gathering comes to the Sorenson Unity Center on Saturday, October 24, starting at 10 AM. The main event is a screening of scenes from Turn Towards Life, an in-progress documentary by A Madden, followed by a panel discussion with Madden, members of the creative team, and people who appear in the film.
The film is part of a larger, long-term multimedia project that follows one queer, nonbinary, solo person's journey through conception, gestation, birth, and parenting. Madden draws on the wisdom of other queer and trans parents and community-created rituals to tell the story. Through film, installation, and community engagement, the project looks at the challenges and possibilities of intentionally building a queer family, framing kin building as an act of resistance and nurturance as a practice of liberation. This particular iteration focuses on conception, and the work invites collective reflection on bodies as portals for life.
If you can make it early, there are two workshops leading up to the screening. From 10 to 10:50 AM, midwives Teryl Stay and Kalli Chason lead Tune Into Your Cycle. Then, from 11 to 11:50 AM, doula Beth Hardy leads Birth In All Its Forms. The screening and panel follow from 12:30 to 2 PM.
