Double-bill screening of 'The Shining' and 'The Wailing' from the Salt Lake Film Society's Tower of Terror horror series at Broadway Centre Cinemas.
The Salt Lake Film Society is bringing horror back to the big screen this fall with its Tower of Terror series, and on Friday, October 23, the spotlight is on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). It's playing at Broadway Centre Cinemas as a double feature with the South Korean film The Wailing, so you're getting two horror movies in one night rather than just one.
The Shining is the one most of us know—the isolated hotel, the descending madness, the twins in the hallway—and seeing it on a cinema screen is a different experience from watching it at home. The Wailing is the companion piece: a South Korean supernatural thriller that builds its tension slowly and hits hard. Pairing a Western horror classic with a modern East Asian one is a nice way to see how different cultures approach the same kind of dread, and since they're playing back-to-back, you can compare them in real time.
This is part of a larger series. Tower of Terror runs across fall weekends at Broadway Centre Cinemas, and the Salt Lake Film Society is leaning hard into the genre's tropes. They've described the program as serving up aliens, slashers, witches, chainsaws and body horror in the darkness of the cinema, so this double bill is just one stop in a longer stretch of horror screenings throughout the season.
