Montreal band Spite House plays Fellowship Hall with its blend of emo, punk and post-hardcore.
Spite House play Fellowship Hall on Monday, October 26, at 7 PM. They're a Montreal band whose sound pulls from emo, punk, and post-hardcore, and this is their only scheduled stop in Salt Lake City.
There's a specific story behind how they came together. Vocalist Maxime Lajoie, who also plays guitar, says an unexpected death was the spark that led him to start singing in a band with his former friend and schoolmate Marc Tremblay on drums. The two developed a writing rhythm drawing on Samiam, Jawbreaker, and Seaweed—three bands that sit squarely in that 90s emo and punk pocket. The lineup was later rounded out with Nabil Ortega on bass.
If those names aren't familiar, they're a good shorthand for where Spite House fits. Samiam and Jawbreaker brought a melodic, often melancholic sensibility to punk, and Seaweed leaned into the heavier, more driving side of the sound. Spite House works across those lines, blending the melodic side of emo with the raw energy of punk and the tension of post-hardcore. It's a sound that can shift from a slow burn to something much louder and more direct without losing its footing.
