Weekly urban sketching class led by artist Olivia Glascock, with materials included and no prior experience necessary.
Olivia Glascock is teaching an urban sketching series at Trolley Square this October, with sessions on Sunday the 11th, 18th, and 25th, from 2 PM to 4 PM. It's a three-part class, so you can sign up for the whole run or just drop in for a single afternoon.
Glascock approaches drawing as a regular practice you can pick up wherever you happen to be, rather than something that requires a studio or a specific mood. Over the course of the sessions, she shows how to build an urban sketch using a viewfinder to frame the composition, and works through line quality with both pen and pencil. She also covers how to resolve shape from the general to the specific, starting with the big forms and filling in the details as you go. The idea is that sketching is something doable whether you're waiting for a connecting flight, hanging out at a shopping mall, or just sitting in your own backyard.

No previous experience is necessary, so you don't need to have picked up a sketchbook since grade school to join in. The classes are open to anyone 16 and over, and materials are included, though you're welcome to bring your own sketchbook if you'd prefer to keep your work in one place. The sessions run from 2 PM to 4 PM on Sundays, October 11, 18, and 25, at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City. It's $90 for all three classes, or $35 if you only want to come for one.
