Free, hands-on STEAM drop-in session for families to design, build and test roller-coaster prototypes using everyday materials.
The Natural History Museum of Utah is hosting its Roller Coaster Design Challenge on Wednesday, November 11, from 5:15 to 8:15 PM in the Earth Lab. It's part of the museum's Family STEAM Explorations, a free, hands-on program that brings in a new STEAM topic every other month for families to work through together.
The challenge puts you in the world of roller coasters, where you'll explore the physics of speed, motion, and gravity by designing, building, and testing your own roller-coaster or sled prototypes. You'll be working with everyday materials to get your design up and running, so it's more about building and tinkering than just talking about the science. It's a drop-in session, which means you can roll in whenever you like during that window rather than having to be there right at the start.
Because it's a family program, it's aimed at youth and their families, and children have to be accompanied by an adult. If you've got kids who love to build things, this is one of those afternoons where they can actually put their ideas to the test and see if they work in real time.
