Live dance performance and spatial activation by Mazeika and Farrow that uses audience movement to explore distance and perspective, based on Robert Smithson's Site/Non-site framework.
Mazeika and Farrow bring Lighthouse to the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art on Thursday, October 29. It's a live dance performance and spatial activation built around Robert Smithson's Site/Non-site framework, which looks at the relationship between a physical place and its displaced counterparts. The piece blends structured movement with scored improvisation, and the distance between the two artists is a big part of it: they created the work while living in different countries, and that gap continues to shape the performance.
On the night, that distance plays out in a few different ways. There's live-streamed video projection and real-time travel, and the audience is invited to change their physical positions within the gallery to shift their own perspective. One performer starts off-site and journeys toward the museum throughout the show, so the distance isn't just a conceptβit's something you watch close up as they move toward the room you're standing in.

Between the projection, the travel, and the way you're asked to move around the space, the whole thing works through notions of distance, balance, and shifting vantage points. It's less about sitting still and watching a stage and more about how you're positioned in the room relative to what's happening. Capacity is limited and an RSVP is required, so you'll want to get your name in early if you're planning to go.
