One-hour guided tour of the historic Salt Lake City and County Building, from its base isolators to the clock tower, with RSVP required.
The Salt Lake City and County Building is opening its doors for guided tours, with the first one on Friday, November 6, at 5:30 PM. It's a one-hour walk that takes you from the base isolators beneath the building all the way up to the clock tower, so you get to see the structure from the bottom up.
If you've lived here a while, you've definitely seen the building—it's one of the city's most beloved landmarks, completed in 1894 and cited as Utah's finest example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Most of us only ever see it from the sidewalk, but this tour lets you actually go inside and see the details that make it what it is. The base isolators are a great place to start; they're the seismic systems that keep the building stable during an earthquake, and they're tucked away where you'd never normally find them. From there, the tour works its way up to the clock tower, which sits high above the street.
One thing to keep in mind: the building is currently under construction, so some parts might be inaccessible. That's why an RSVP is required—you'll want to secure your spot before you head over. If November 6 doesn't work for you, there are more dates coming up on Fridays: November 13, 20, and December 4, 11, and 18. It's a good run of dates to choose from if you're trying to fit this into a busy month.
